Day in the Life of a Pitt Graduate Student

Brad Golish, Industrial Engineering Grad Student

7:17 a.m. - Alarm goes off. Mikey and Big Bob on 96.1 FM are in the middle of either "Redneck Roadkill" or "Hot Mom Check In."

7:19 a.m. - Turn on SportsCenter to check in on my Black and Gold.

7:25 a.m. - Grab some Count Chocula to start the day off right.

7:59 a.m. - Finish watching SportsCenter. Head to the gym.

9 a.m. - Finish up at the gym and head back home for a shower.

9:45 a.m. - Arrive at school. Check in with Hotmail, Gmail, Myspace, ESPN, and Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

10 a.m. - Fill up the task bar with Microsoft applications and get to work.

11:30 a.m. - Break for lunch: half price at Hemingway’s until 11:45 a.m. Get there early. Grilled Cheese is not a bad option.

12:10 p.m. - Back from lunch. Check in with Hotmail, Gmail, Myspace, ESPN, and Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Just because you’re confined indoors doesn’t mean the world stops around you. There is still a lot going on.

4 p.m. - This is a Friday in the life, a day with certain special exceptions. The two obvious choices for happy hour at this point would be Hemingway’s for $1 Miller Lites or Mad Mex for a $5 Big Azz Margarita—peach or raspberry would be my two personal choices. (Warning: Three margaritas and daylight do not mix well).

7 p.m. - Happy hour ends. Go home and power-nap before heading out for a Friday night on the town.

9:30 p.m. - Some personal favorites: Cappyoke, where you can be a rock star in your world for one evening, or hitting up Jack’s in the South Side. On a Friday night, you can’t go wrong.

2 a.m. - You don’t have to go home, but you gotta get out of here—well, at least that’s what they are gonna tell you at the bar. Going home isnot an option. Hungry. Why wait? I like Village Pizza in Shadyside (good and greasy) or the best late-night food in Pittsburgh, Ritter’s. My suggestion would be to check out the chili-cheese omelet. Just to be safe, order an extra side of chili. Sometimes they get a little skimpy.

What Makes Pittsburgh Distinctive?

  1. You will never be able to hit all the South Side bars, so don’t even try. I’ve been here eight years and haven't even come close
  2. We love our sports teams. We might get down on them every once in a while, but the locals, including myself, bleed black and gold.
  3. Pittsburghese. "Yinz goin' dahntahn to watch da Pengins and grab a cold Irn?" Spell-check that.
